Hello Friends, July 2010
First of all, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to all who have offered their condolences and their prayers at the repose of my mother. My Mama was a hero to me--a rock of support, a fervent intercessor, a voice of comfort in every dark night.
She was the last of my forebears to pass. Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles--all of them are gone now. All at once, I find myself the dividing line between my departed ancestors and my living progeny.
This sobers me. It certainly makes me look at my children and grandchildren differently. The reality of death is brought into sharp relief. Yet standing here, having become the temporal anchor of my lineage, I am just as vividly reminded that there is no finality in death. Death, St. Paul reminds us, has been “swallowed up” in Christ’s victory over it. As a result, the veil that separates me from my Mama and Daddy, my grandparents, and all who have come before me, is a very thin one, indeed.
One day, that veil will disappear entirely. Then we shall see not only our departed loved ones. We shall see the face of Christ. The One who gives life to all--to the righteous and the sinner, to those dwelling in Paradise, in Hades, and on the earth--will rise in His goodness before us. Will His arising bring eternal joy to me, or everlasting fear? This is the question that must be answered by each of us while we walk in the land of the living.
Let us so live that when we pass beyond this temporary mortality, we may enter into eternal, intimate union with God, and with all who have come before us.
In Christ’s love,
Matthew

We’re here at last!
Thanks to all for your prayers! We’re now living just south of Bonners in Sandpoint, Idaho. We look forward to the work God has for us here, both in Bonners Ferry and in Sandpoint.
If you’re looking to relocate somewhere quiet and out of the way, with a small but dynamic family of Orthodox believers, consider Bonners Ferry. Check out the Holy Myrrhbearers web site for more information.

Food for the Soul:
“While we are seeking in our imagination, in our heart, in our experience, for that
God we have known up till now, we will pass by that God who at that very moment is
opening up to us, and we will not recognize Him. We may even possibly dodge past
Him because that God may appear not to resemble the God towards whom we were moving,
whom we expected, whom we long for in our hearts.” from Encounter, by Metropolitan
Anthony of Sourozh

a very mild winter this year. The first of April last year, we still had 3 feet
of snow on the ground!)
