A Report From Oregon (Eugene, Salem, Corvallis--December 2007)

I met Matthew and his wife Alice in 1996, before they became Orthodox.  Our paths have crossed many times over those 11 years. When I learned that he had left his teaching position and was going out and doing talks, I invited Matthew to come and speak to the churches I serve in Eugene and Salem, Oregon, as well as a sister church in the Albany/Corvallis area.

Yes, we kept Matthew busy! I am new to these churches but not new to Matthew.  So I was confident that this was a good thing to do. Matthew gave a great presentation on Friday night to the faithful of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Eugene, Oregon. Towards the end he asked for comments or questions from the audience. I was a little nervous at this point, not being sure how Matthew was received. After all, I knew Matthew; had heard him speak before, and had brought him here to speak.

A young man I barely knew, who was a catechumen, stood up and said, “When my parents were catechumens and I wasn’t, they gave me a copy of your book. When I read it, I was mad at them and didn’t like the book or you.”

Did I hear what I thought I heard ? I said to myself. Oh no!

Then the young man continued. “But now, they are baptized Orthodox Christians and I will soon join them. And after hearing you tonight, I just want to say that I really like you now.”  Matthew and the young man embraced, and we all rejoiced!

I highly recommend that you bring Matthew to your community. His story is both powerful and meaningful, whether you were raised in the Church or entered as an adult. He is gifted speaker, humble and genuine. I am confident that he will be well received and embraced joyfully by your people.
